i can be prettier than maggie cheung.. maybe

with 4 comments

there is a selective group of people i always say hi to whenever i am walking around in soho. one of them is my good man – mr.lau. i made friends with this charming qipao maker when i ordered my first qipao from him and our friendship started when i asked him:-

seriously are you going to make me look like maggie cheung ?

he thought about my question and answered,” i can’t make you thinner than maggie but i can make you more beautiful than her”.

he made me laughed so hard i’d almost died. i fancied the idea of being more beautiful than maggie cheung. since then, i always enjoy going into his shop just to say hello to him and try on a few qipaos just for fun. if i could and if qipaos aren’t so expensive and exquisite. i want to wear more of it and i don’t care if it makes me look like a ghost walking around central.

i like mr lau’s shop linva – at anytime there are probably five people working in the shop. two ladies that serve customers. they are old and i like old people because they have good stories for me ( although i think old people smell funny, you know the old people smell) they tell me wonderful stories about their work and customers and as far as i know anson chan and elsie leung get their qipaos made here too. comparing with shanghai tang – i think mr. lau’s qipaos are well made and better priced. shanghai tang prices are pretty absurd.

when i think about my friendship with mr. lau, one of the values i take away with me is that regardless of how old you are, you can still do your work, do it well and infuse it with pride. it makes such a difference from the point of view of a client- mr. lau and the two ladies always pick special things for me to try and even though they know that i may not buy it all the time, they tell me to just -to have fun and see how it looks like. i like that princess treatment!

this qipao is amazing. i am still contemplating on buying it

not really my style but they asked me to try it on anyways. i had to give in due to popular request

if you want a qipao made- give it about 1-3 months depending on the complexity. if you are on holiday and you are only going to be here a few days, linva does shipping. all qipaos have a lifetime guarantee and you can always bring back in the shop to get it altered.

linva’s address is  38 cochrane street central( at the side of the soho escalators) and phone number is 2544 2456
